The approach is based on a\ngenerative model for skeletal profiles that replicates the two\nphases of formation of any faunal assemblage: initial\naccumulation as a function of human transport strategies and\nsubsequent attrition.Two parameters define this model: 1) the\ntransport preference (alpha), which can take any value between\n- 1 (mostly axial contribution) and 1 (mostly appendicular\ncontribution) following strategies constructed as a function of\nbutchering efficiency of different anatomical elements and the\nresults of ethnographic studies, and 2) degree of attrition\n(beta), which can vary between 0 (no attrition) and 10 (maximum\nattrition) and relates the survivorship of bone elements to\ntheir maximum bone density. Starting from uniform prior\nprobability distribution functions of alpha and beta, a Monte\nCarlo Markov Chain sampling based on a random walk\nMetropolis-Hasting algorithm is adopted to derive the posterior\nprobability distribution functions, which are then available\nfor interpretation. During this process, the likelihood of\nobtaining the observed percentages of MAU given a pair of\nparameter values is estimated by the inverse of the Chi2\nstatistic, multiplied by the proportion of elements within a 1\npercent of the observed value.
